We can give a better description of the thermal motion of atoms in a crystal by considering lattice vibrations.
If we assume that the displacements of atoms from the equilibrium state is small, then we can use the harmonic approxiamtion.
Another simplification of the harmonic approximation is the spring model of lattice vibrations where we only consider the closest pair interactions of the atoms, and we model them as springs.
